Periodontics (Gum Treatment)/Laser Therapy (Periodontal Health)
As trained periodontists, we specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease.
Periodontal Laser Therapy is an alternative to treating gum disease. Laser Therapy utilizes a dental laser to access and remove inflamed and diseased gum tissue from around the root of the tooth. Once the infected tissue is removed and the root is exposed, the root scaling begins (this involves scraping off the plaque that has built up below the gumline)
- Deep Cleaning ( Scaling and Root planing)
- Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy
- Laser infection control
- Localized placement of antibiotics
During the last 20 years dental implants have become a great alternative to other methods of replacing missing teeth. Excellent success rates and a variety of available options give dentists many new ways to treat and replace lost teeth. Essentially, a dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or a bridge. Implants are a good option for people who have lost teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Implants offer long-lasting results and help preserve tooth-supporting bone that typically deteriorates when a tooth is lost.
Pedodontics (Children Dentistry)
From baby teeth to braces and beyond, children’s dentistry (pedodontics) focuses on a wide range of conditions affecting dental development in youth. Our team of pediatric dental professionals will help ease your child into their first dental experience, and give you peace of mind about your child’s long-term oral health. We provide full service pedodontic dentistry services for children and teens, including:
- Nitrous Gas
- Tooth Colored Fillings
Clear Aligner Therapy (Invisalign and Clear Corrector etc)
Clear aligner therapy refers to a series of clear dental appliances that are formed to the shape of a patient’s teeth. Clear aligners gradually improve appearance and function by applying gentle, consistent pressure to a patient’s teeth while still being discreet and convenient:
- Clear Correct
Oral Surgery (Mouth Surgery)
Unfortunately, teeth can become diseased, damaged, or injured over time, and in some cases, may need to be removed or extracted. Our highly experienced San Diego dental care team will make your tooth extraction experience as painless as possible and help you explore all the options for tooth replacement afterward. Our oral surgery options include:
- Tooth Extraction
- Bone Grafts
TMJ (Jaw Joint Treatment)
If you’ve experienced pain in your facial muscles or neck or jaw pain, you may have TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder. Fortunately, there are several noninvasive treatment options for patients with TMJ. Once Dr. Karia performs an evaluation and confirms a diagnosis of TMJ disorder, we can determine the proper course of treatment. Our TMJ treatment services in San Diego include:
- Night Guard
- Occlusal bite slint
- Sports Bite Guard
In-Lays & On-Lays
A dental inlay is a pre-molded filling that fits into the grooves of a tooth (they do not extend over the cusp of the tooth). Typically, inlays are used as a restorative method to repair a tooth after it sustains harm from injury or decay.
A dental onlay is a method used to repair a tooth that has more extensive damage affecting the cusp, tips of the tooth, or the biting surface. It is more conservative alternative to a tooth that otherwise may need a crown.
WHAT IS ICON? Resin infiltration is a minimally invasive restorative treatment for post-ortho white-spot lesions (WSLs) and certain congenital hypocalcified enamel lesions (“hypo” spots). WSLs are associated with subsurface enamel porosities caused by a cyclical imbalance between demineralization and remineralization of the enamel, resulting from poor hygiene and associated plaque, bacteria, and acids. With time, remineralization at the outer surface of the tooth decreases the access of calcium and other ions to deeper portions of the enamel, eventually arresting the lesion. The lesions look white because there is a scattering of light at the subsurface of the demineralized enamel. Hypo spots, or enamel bruising, are congenital enamel defects often caused by trauma or infection involving the primary teeth.
This breakthrough treatment preserves healthy tooth structure and prolongs the life expectancy of the natural teeth. It can usually be completed in just one dental visit.
Silver Diamine Fluoride is an antimicrobial liquid that is able to treat cavities in a non-invasive, fast, affordable, and painless manner. Some patients who have active tooth decay may be eligible for an alternative treatment that uses Silver Diamine Fluoride. FDA approved in August of 2014, SDF became commercially available to dental professionals in April of 2015 as Advantage Arrest by Elevate Oral Care. Compared to a traditional filling that requires shots of local anesthetic and drilling of tooth structure, this treatment is non-invasive and more comfortable for the patient. It is a liquid that is simply brushed on to the cavity that can stop current decay and also prevent new decay in the future. SDF Therapy is an alternative treatment that stops decay through noninvasive methods, and is particularly helpful with young children and elderly adults.
MI Paste from GC America is a remineralizing toothpaste with Recaldent, derived from milk protein, which delivers the essential minerals calcium and phosphate back into your enamel. MI Paste is not toothpaste, but rather a treatment for enamel that is applied to the teeth after routine brushing and flossing. In fact, in Australia where this product was developed, they call it “Tooth Mousse.”
MI Paste and MI Paste Plus are the only products for professional use containing the active ingredient RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP), a special milk-derived protein that has a unique ability to release bio-available calcium and phosphate (and fluoride in MI Paste Plus) to tooth surfaces. When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile, these key ingredients can make a big difference in overall health.
Choose MI Paste and MI Paste Plus with RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP):
- Relieves tooth sensitivity
- Does not irritate dry mouths
- Provides a topical coating for patients suffering from sensitivity and oral mucosa
- Helps minimize tooth sensitivity before and after professional cleaning and tooth whitening
What is the difference between MI Paste & MI Paste Plus?
MI Paste does not contain fluoride and is recommended for children under six years of age and pregnant women. MI Paste Plus offers the same great benefits of regular MI Paste; it is enhanced with a patented form of fluoride.
