Periodontal Treatment in San Diego, CA: Save Your Smile from Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common infection that affects millions of Americans. At a minimum, periodontal disease causes redness, swelling, and tenderness of the gums. In its advanced form, it leads to gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss. At Spectrum Dental, we provide advanced periodontal treatment to patients in San Diego and nearby areas. Our experienced dentists use advanced technology and clinical excellence to address mild and severe gum infections.

What is periodontal disease?

Often taken for granted, brushing and flossing are among the best ways to prevent gum disease. However, when you neglect your oral hygiene, dental plaque can accumulate along the gum line, leading to gingivitis, the earliest form of periodontal disease. Gingivitis causes gum redness, tenderness, and swelling. You may also experience bleeding when brushing and flossing. At this point, gingivitis can be reversed because the bone and fibers that support your teeth are unaffected.

If you fail to treat gingivitis, it advances to periodontitis, where the infection moves beneath the surface. It attacks the underlying bone and ligaments, causing deep pockets around teeth that trap more plaque and tartar. Your gums may begin to pull back (recede), and treatment is needed to prevent further damage.

The final stage of gum disease is advanced periodontitis. At this stage, bacterial overgrowth occurs, and the periodontal pockets become much deeper. This causes your teeth to shift or loosen and eventually fall out. Aggressive treatment is required to stabilize your teeth.

What are the treatment options for gum disease?

With an in-house periodontist, Dr. David Ahn, we can help you regain your healthy gums regardless of the stage of your infection. We emphasize a conservative approach, but surgical intervention may be needed for advanced gum disease.

  • Scaling and root planing: Scaling removes plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line with special instruments. Root planing smooths the root surfaces to promote tissue reattachment and prevent further calculus buildup.
  • Gum flap surgery: Sometimes, the periodontal pockets may be too deep to clean with scaling instruments. For gum flap or pocket reduction surgery, the doctor folds the gum tissue to expose the tooth roots for effective cleaning. If the underlying bone is damaged, your San Diego periodontist may reshape it before stitching the gum tissue back.
  • LANAP®: This is a technology-led alternative to traditional gum surgery. While you may still need traditional gum surgery, LANAP is a viable solution for many patients. Instead of scalpels and sutures, the doctor uses light energy to target harmful bacteria and diseased tissues. LANAP is minimally invasive, precise, and results in faster recovery.
  • Bone and gum grafting: We recommend gum grafting if the disease has irreparably damaged your jawbone or gum tissues. Your periodontist remedies this by transplanting healthy tissue to the damaged areas. Over time, the graft fuses with the existing tissue to form a healthy, solid foundation.
